NEWS UPDATE: CITY FANS 5TH WORST IN LEAGUE (WORSE THAN MILLWALL) (13/07/2000)
A report by Labour MP Jim Murphy says that City have the 5th largest number of known football hooligans in England. Leeds top the list, with Stoke in second. Then come Manchester City and Chelsea respectivly. But then City come with 21 known hooligans. That makes City worse than Millwall who are in 6ft with 20. While clubs like Cardiff and Derby (who have the infamous DLF Derby Lunatic Fringe) are no where to be seen in the top 6. City's placement in the list will shock many associated with the club, which has seen little trouble of any significance since 1996. NEWS UPDATE: LEVER SIGNS (12/07/2000)
Danny Wilson has completed his first signing as City manager by capturing Grimsby Town centre back Mark Lever on a free transfer. The 6ft 3in defender joins City under the Bosman ruling after 13 years at Blundell Park. The 30 year old has joined the squad for pre season training after he complted a medical. He said "You can get too comfortable at a club and I was ready for a change. I came down to speak to Danny on Friday and didn't have to think twice once the offer was made. "City are a big club ready to go places and I'm looking forward to playing a part in that. You won't see me making too many dazzling runs down the right wing, but I can promise supporters 100 per cent commitment in every game. "I wouldn't describe myself as a stopper because I like to think there is a bit more to my game than that. But I like to attack the ball in the air and would hope to win most things in our box." Wilson added "We clearly needed to replace Shaun Taylor, who is still facing a battle to overcome his knee problems. I have known about Mark for a long time and I am convinced he can fill the gap Shaun has left." FOR MORE NEWS + OLD STORIES CLICK HERE

Lever will move down to Bristol with his wife as soon as possible.
NEWS UPDATE: IMPRESSED LEVER TO HAVE TALKS/ ADE INTEREST (07/07/2000)
Grimsby Town centre back Mark Lever is expected at Ashton Gate this morning to discuss a possible move to Bristol City. The 30 year old has been billed as the new Shaun Taylor, with his strength and aerial ability. 6ft 3in Lever is alongside Bradford's John Dreyer and Darlington's Craig Liddle as Danny Wilson's main three defensive targets as he looks for a replacement for the injured Shaun Taylor. Lever has also had interest from other clubs but insists he is very impressed by Bristol City. It was Lever who was involved in the infamous Steve Torpey clash in 1997, that left Torpey out cold in City's opening game of the season at Blundell Park. Lever has asked for City fan's forgiveness over the incident, in which Torpey and Lever both went up for a ball and clashed heads. Torpey had just scored in that game, his debut, but was then out for over a month. Lever has also been talking to Bristol Rovers centre back Andy Tilson. Tilson, a former team-mate of Lever has been giving him advice on life in Bristol and especially the huge rivalry between City and Rovers. Lever has been offered a 2 year extension to his contract at Grimsby, but after 14 years with the Mariners he has lost his place in the starting 11 and now feels that it is time for a change. Meanwhile Leicester City have confirmed their interest in ex-City striker Ade Akinbiyi. The Wolves hitman may be on his way to Filbert Street in a 4.5M+ move. Any such move would be of great significance to City who stand to take 20% of the fee as part of the sell on clause put in Akinbiyi's transfer to Wolves last year. NEWS UPDATE: CITY TARGET DREYER/ BUTTERFIELD RUMOURS DISMISSED (05/07/2000)
City are ready to go head to head with second division rivals Walsall in their bid to sign centre back John Dreyer. The 37 year old has left old club Bradford after he refused a new contract and is now a free agent. This means that should City get their man, there will be no transfer fee. But Walsall have also expressed an interest in Dreyer and want him as player/ coach. Dreyer is expected to make a decision on his future soon "I've had talks with a couple of clubs and will make a decision soon,". Wilson hopes he can lure experienced defender to Ashton Gate to act as cover for injured Shaun Taylor. Should Dreyer choose a move to Ashton Gate he would link up with Keith Millen (33) and Shaun Taylor (37) to form a grandad's defence. But the experience may come in handy as they help bring up the clubs younger generation of defenders. Matt Hill and Joe Burnell are still teenagers, while Andrew Jordan in just 20. Meanwhile Danny Wilson has moved to kill off rumours about Grimsby Town right back Danny Butterfield. Wilson tried to sign the promising 20 year old while he was at Sheffield Wednesday. Butterfield has made his way up through the Grimsby ranks after he was released by Leicester as a schoolboy. Butterfield has also enjoyed being involved in the England under 18 set up. But Wilson has played down rumours of a possible move for the young player. FOR MORE NEWS + OLD STORIES CLICK HERE

NEWS UPDATE: JORDAN OFFERED NEW CONTRACT(04/07/2000)
City defender Andrew Jordan is set to be offered a new contract, that the club hope will secure his future at the club for many years to come. Jordan, son of ex-Manchester United and Bristol City player Joe Jordan, broke into the Bristol City first team last season and held down his place due to a string of superb solid performances at centre back. At just 20, Jordan has received a lot of attention for his cool head and following fears that he may ask for a move to Scotland, once his contract expires (this summer) new manager Danny Wilson as stepped in to offer him a contract to stay at Ashton Gate. Jordan had been waiting for a new manager to come in before opening talks about his future, but with Wilson in place, he hopes to have talks later this week. This summer a number of City players have extended or renewed contracts, including Marvin Brown and hopefully Scott Murray will sign his 4 year deal today. Jordan in another City player who has come through the ranks after he signed as a trainee in 1997. 6ft 2in Jordan is almost certain to be in contention for a first team place at City next season should he stay, although it has been rumoured that Wilson is considering approaches for Swansea's Matthew Bound and Nottingham Forest's Christian Edwards. The Manchester born son of ex Scottish international and City manager Joe Jordan has had a superb past 12 months and has also broken into the Scottish under 21 side. NEWS UPDATE: SHAIL MAKES MOVE/ JONES AND HUTCHINGS TO GO TOO? (04/07/2000)
Veteran defender Mark Shail as left the club to join division 3 newcomers Kidderminster Harriers on a free transfer. The 32 year old centre back has left under the Bosman ruling. Shail's contract expired at the end of last season and was not renewed. There has been confusion surrounding Shail's Kidderminster move. It was reported as long ago as 7th June that the ex- Yeovil star had joined them, but the deal has only been finalised within the last few days. Swedish born Shail has said that he was impressed by Kidderminster and Jan Molby was a key reason for him joining the Worcestershire club. Shail was signed in 1993 from Yeovil Town for a bargain 45,000. By 1994 Shail had a reputation as being one of the first division's outstanding defenders. In recent years a knee injury has plagued Shail and limited his first team chances and last season he only managed one substitute appearance all season. But it is now thought that 'sharky' is back to full fitness and ready to help out newly promoted Kidderminster in the third division. No doubt Shail's experience and passion will help out the Harriers no end. On behalf of myself and many other City fans I'd like to wish Mark Shail all the best for the future. Meanwhile Danny Wilson is expected to talk to Steve Jones and Carl Hutchings this week about their future's at Ashton Gate. Neither are popular with City fans and both have struggled to get into the first team in recent times. Hutchings spent the last part of last season on loan at his first club Brentford, and has been linked to a move back to Griffin Park, while Jones also spent the last part of last season away from Ashton Gate. His last appearance was for third division Southend, where he had a loan spell. Jones has been linked with a love to Wycombe. Both players are set to meet with new boss Danny Wilson, and a decision will be made whether to put the pair up for sale or to give them another go at City. FOR MORE NEWS + OLD STORIES CLICK HERE

NEWS UPDATE: MURRAY TO SIGN 4 YEAR CONTRACT(03/07/2000)
City hope that 1m rated winger Scott Murray will today put pen to paper and sign a new 4 year deal. The 150k signing from Aston Villa in 1997 showed blistering form last season. Along with his lightening quick pace, his much improved crosses and his superb runs he also notched 11 goals in just 43 appearances, of which some were a result of superb runs and strikes. Murray who began the season out of form and out of the side struggled to hold down a first team place under Tony Pulis, but after his departure Murray played every game. Fears have been growing that Murray, who only has a year to run on his current contract may sit tight and wait for his contract to expire, then make a move under the Bosman ruling, that would net him a fortune in signing on fees. However loyal Murray is prepared to tied himself to City for a further 4 years and claims that he is happy in Bristol. The 26 year old Scott is sure to be a centre piece in Danny Wilson's plans for next season and everyone is hoping that he will repeat the form of last season and repeat the goals like those against Scunthorpe and Exeter last term.
